I’ll be leaving to the countryside tomorrow to have traditional Finnish Midsummer Day. Get utterly wasted, ignite the bonfire and summon the forces of darkness… umm you can drop the forces of darkness part(or can you?!). Maybe swim at the lake and sweat in the sauna. I’ll try to remember to take my camera with me and take few pics of the bonfire and so on.
I’ll be away couple of days so I’ll be posting shit loads of music today for you and maybe some pics too!
Yessss… been up for 50 hours, couldn’t sleep last night and I’m not even tired yet, wtf is going on?! One more thing, I saw cute wild rabbit in the forest just outside of my door but my camera’s zoom is gawd awful and it can’t be seen in the picture.
Metal is my favorite genre by far. Black metal and avant-garde metal usually gives me best vibes. The favourite type of music is also strongly connected to my life situation usually so it changes quite much. Right now I’m mad about ebm/darkwave genre.
2) What type of music do you strongly dislike?
I don’t think there’s any genre I absolutely hate. I’ve always thought that there’s gems in all of them if you bother to familiarize yourself with the genres. But if you really need to know I don’t really enjoy rap music that much, even though I liked Blade 2 soundtrack.. At least couple of songs can be considered as rap there?
3) Name a band that has great meaning to you.
Now this is really hard to answer. There are few Arcturus songs which I heard 15 years ago for the first time and they left me with emotional imprint. I still get the same feelings back to me when I listen for example the Ad Astra from Arcturus. Arcturus is probably the most meaningful band for me. La masquerade Infernale introduced me to the avant-garde metal and I haven’t looked back after that. The newer bands which are somewhat meaningful are probably Thy Catafalque and Transcending Bizarre?. Both can be considered avant-garde metal bands.
4) What is the first band or artist you were a ”fan” of?
It was Finnish punk/progressive/rock etc. band called YUP. They had this weird music style and the lyrics were satirical or just really weird. I’ll post one song from them later so you’ll get the picture. Even though you are going to miss quite a big part of the music because the lyrics are in Finnish.
5) What do you listen to when you’re happy?
Hmm, I really don’t know to be honest. Now that I think of I don’t listen to “happy” music really. Well I guess I just put my whole playlist on shuffle. Lucyfire comes to mind actually, it’s really positive stuff and the female vocals by Sille Lemke are best in any metal.
6) What do you listen to when you’re sad?
Leandra was the first thing that popped in my mind after reading this. I think it’s considered to be alternative/experimental/gothic stuff. She has beautiful voice and I love the atmosphere in her songs. Same kind of stuff works for me when I’m down.
7) Name a band you love that isn’t that well known.
Can I name more than one? Transcending Bizarre? must be the one I love most. I discovered them few years ago in last.fm(damn that site has introduced me hundreds of new bands) and after that I’ve been in love with the music. Just listing couple more: Illidiance, Stalwart, Angst Skvadron etc. There’s tons of these.
8) Name a band nobody would expect you to like
Now this is giving me hard time. There’s actually quite a lot song’s nobody would think I like but naming the whole band is way harder. Can I change the question?! Well let’s say Evanescence, I liked couple of their songs(Going Under is awesome!) and I don’t want to kill myself when I hear them playing. :D
9) Name a band that everybody else seems to like, but you dislike.
No idea to be honest. Everybody else meaning most people or most of friends? I would have said Sabaton here couple of months before but I saw them live at Finnish Metal Expo and it changed my opinion about them. Sorry I don’t have answer for this question.
10) What instrument do you play?
I “play” drums and used to play classical piano stuff.
11) What instrument would you like to be able to play?
Drums, guitar, bass, piano for starters.
12) Name a musician you admire.
Dan Swanö is my personal music god. Every single band he is in are at least fucking awesome. The Swedish Demiurg being the latest one I found out, brutal death metal stuff. It seems to me that he is shitting diamonds, he is that GOOD.
13) Do you think it’s important for a band to write meaningful lyrics?
Depends. I sometimes like to listen to lyrics and sometimes I don’t care. It’s connected to genre for me. I more often listen to lyrics when I’m listening to “sad” song if I’m just feeling like headbanging or partying it doesn’t matter at all. I just want to get to feel the music in me.
14) What is the first album you bought?
Toppatakkeja ja Toledon Terasta from YUP.
15) What is the last album you bought?
Chaosweavers Puppetmaster of Pandemonium. To be honest I haven’t bought that many albums lately because of Spotify which I find great.
16) What upcoming release are you most excited about?
I don’t have any particular in my waiting list anymore. Transcending Bizarre? released their new album at the end of the last year and it was easily the album of the year for me. Another one I waited for was the Great Mass from Septic Flesh and it’s already released too. I have no idea if Katai Tamas is going to release any new material solo or in Thy Catafalque but I’m looking forward for that if he does.
17) If you could play in a band, what kind of band would that be?
If I had the skills it would probably be somekind of black metal/avant-garde stuff. Also I would like to do some EBM music.
18) How many bands have you seen live?
No idea about the count.
19) What was the best and worst live performance you have seen?
Hocico was the best gig I’ve ever been at. It was about two hours and I thought it had just started when they ended their encore. Another good one was Stalwart, I think my neck felt like shit for about a week after the concert. Freak Kitchen was also very good couple of years back, damn charismatic performers, everyone of them. Damn they should come back to Finland soon! Triptykon was also fucking great at Finnish Metal Expo.
The only bad performance has been Fear of Domination’s last one. There was absolutely no feeling in their performance which is really sad because I loved their first album. Now it’s really hard for me to give them a second chance.
20) What bands haven’t you seen live yet but would you still like to see?
This list is going to be longer than the whole post so far if I don’t cut it down. So I’ll just say Arcturus, Sleetgrout, Centhron, Darzamat, Eternal Deformity, Angst Skvadron, Ayria, Zombie Girl, Oranssi Pazuzu, Tiamat, Lucyfire(they are no longer), Transcending Bizarre?, Old Man’s Child, Asphyxia, T3rr03 3rr0r, Illidiance and the list goes on forever.
Holy crap! The gig they threw at us was so damn awesome. By far the best gig I’ve been in. They took the growd really well and the singer’s charisma is really something. Only downside was that it didn’t last long enough!
